Ironically, the idea for the Volkswagen, meaning the people's car, came from Adolf Hitler. He chose Ferdinand Porsche to engineer a car that could carry three kids and two adults, and that could do 62 miles per hour (100km/h). And the idea was, that people could buy it trough an affordable savings scheme. That's how the base for the VW Beetle was born.
One of the first prototypes were called KdF-Wagen. In German this stands for Kraft durch Freude meaning strength through joy. The slogan "Das Auto” means the car in German.
